After the war, Doe continued to live an active life. He returned to the US after the surrender of Japan and married his girlfriend, Juanita Nicey. Together, they had three children: Catherine Y. McDougal, Susan M. Ladner, and Albert E. Kranz. He worked as a civil service employee for the Navy until his retirement, and was an active Freemason. Doe was always a handyman, even at his old age. His tool shed was his hallowed ground that only he stepped foot in. My father frequently recounts when after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the first thing Doe did when everything was settled was get out on to his roof and begin to work on fixing it, at the ripe age of 85. Unfortunately, Doe passed away on December 23, 2007, at age 87. He was survived by his wife, Juanita, as well as their three kids, six grand-children, and three great-grandchildren, including me. He is buried in Long Beach City Cemetery, and was given a Masonic funeral. Doe was a great man and I am proud to say that he was my great grandfather, as he is one of my heroes.
